DJs aren’t Musicians

Many musicians, do not believe spinning a disk or beat creation makes a DJ a Musician.  So Jim reviewed his thought about DJs, their skills, and if they are musicians or not.

What is a DJ?

Wikipedia describes A disc jockey, often abbreviated as DJ, as a person who plays existing recorded music for a live audience. The most common types of DJs include radio DJ, club DJ who performs at a nightclub or music festival, and turntablist who uses record players, usually turntables, to manipulate sounds on phonograph records.

So is being a DJ a good career?

DJ’ing can certainly be a lucrative and rewarding career for those who enjoy creating music and making arrangements of effects using electronic means.  There have been more than a few famous, and renowned artists that certainly made an impact in music such as (just to name a very few) Danny TenagliaTiësto, Fatboy Slim, and Avicci.   The list can be long and by no means is a full or comprehensive one.  Just merely a few names that represent some of the famous artists who made being a DJ cool, famous and something to be looked up to as a talent once only thought of when discussing more traditional musicians.

Many have dreams of trying and as mentioned above some have certainly become very famous doing what they love and are great at.  So from our perspective yes DJs are musicians because they have the talent and skill to get a crowd all fired up to get on the dance floor at any club or pack a stadium to hear them play music, and isn’t that the point for the love of music?  At least we think so.

Remembering a DJ / Musical Star

Last April, Jim of Slick Audio took a moment to wish DJ Avicii friends, family, and fans a heartfelt farewell to this young DJ who captured a great deal of buzz over the past few years. The Swedish musician rose to fame after his breakout hit “levels“.  Avicii went on to produce multiple hits touring around the world.

Avicci who rose to fame quickly decided to retire and move his interests into other things and retired from music in 2016 just a few years after “making it”.    He had a few medical issues over the past few years which might have led to his retirement.

Although he was new to fame in music, his influence, creativity, and passion for making music were truly inspiring to so many.  Thanks for making the world a better place through music.

Jim also discussed his thoughts about DJs and how they have impacted the music industry.

The use of this groundbreaking technology has opened up the world of music creation and production to so many.   It allows a revolutionary artist to design music without even knowing how to play an instrument.  Regardless it does not take away the artistic ability they have to create a great song or piece of music.

So what do you think do you have to play an instrument to be a musician?
